But today wasn’t normal in the least. I’ve been in bed for almost 48 hours. I wasn’t running temperature, I wasn’t running stomach, I was just weak and in pains. So today, I decided to go for the checkup I’ve been so bent on delaying.
I picked a keke to my station. It slowed down and I was about to give the description when I saw the guy was foine…so I quickly switched it for a greeting. I greeted that “Good morning” for three consecutive times and nigga was just looking at me like I grew horns. So I figured it was his English and my English. Maybe his English wasn’t good.
I was going to be embarrassed but I repeated “odeshie “ in my head and give him my destination.
My people, in the car (forgive my manners), I was calculating how much he was gonna collect before there was a long rough road ahead and I was the only person in the keke. Mek e no look like I dey hire.
I quickly calculated the money in my purse and did the necessary budgeted deductions.
On the way, he spoke to someone and it was clear he stayed at Togo.
Finally, we arrived at my destination and because I didn’t want to ask how much, I gave him 20 cedis note.
My people yieeeee, I alighted, he looked up at me and gave me 15 cedis.
Then the small convo begun.
Him: Are you married?
Me: Oh no (with a broad smile. Only, I was asking numerous questions in my head.)
Him: So do you live around?
Me: No please
Him: Where do you stay?
Me: (what do I say now? My station, my father’s house, or my sisters end?) I stay at Ho (deciding on the latter)
Him: Where specifically?
Me: (What now????? 🤦🏻♀️ I rattled off my sister’s destination)
Him: So can we be friends?
Me: Oh okay (with a shrug)
Him: I’ll like to take your number.
Me: 02********
Him: Your name?
Me: Emmy
Him: Peter
Me: Okay….thank you.
How his English came is still a mystery to me.
